Written and illustrated by Apay'uq, Quyana Spirit is inspired by her children, Bristol Bay and Yup'ik values. This story brings the reader into a magical world that is only visible with an open mind and awareness of the world around us. As the main characters step into their journey, they pause to take note of the life around them with wondrous joy and gratitude.
"We live in a world that is magic, but we need great big iik (Yup'ik word for eyes) to see. Would you like help opening yours so you could malik (Yup'ik word for, come along) and explore with me?"

I am so excited to have this exceptional book! As a Tribal Member, I appreciate the context of the story; as it mirrors our Native Values. The artwork is very eye catching. I see different things every time I turn the pages. The addition of the Yup'ik language sprinkled within the story engages the reader in a pleasantly, introductory way. The pronunciation and meaning in the side notes enhance the experience. I LOVE this book and highly recommend it to everyone.
Beautifully written and illustrated book that captures the soul of Bristol Bay. Its people, its culture, its salmon. The land provides and must be protected. This book is magic.
Wow! This book is from Bristol Bay!! I enjoyed it so much. My children were so curious and they noticed the similarities it has to our culture and the area (mountains rivers etc.)
The art and story are so engaging and stunning! Beautifully represents Yup’ik culture in Bristol Bay! I thoroughly enjoyed seeing our language weaved through the story so naturally. Made me tear up realizing I knew all the words - I always thought “I can’t speak Yup’ik” when the truth is that I know some and that’s a good start! This gives young and old people alike a starting point to realizing our ability to learn Yup’ik. I also hope I ur youth can hear their elders in stories like this and see themselves in the characters! That ability to identify and relate is so helpful in being solid in our identity. Thank you for sharing your experience and hard work with us Apay’u!
It was a fun reading adventure. I love the colors in the illustrations.
